I graduated from the University of Oregon with my Ba. in music composition in 2008. After that I moved back to Hawaii where I'm from and I began teaching private lessons. I have now taught music at several schools and am currently teaching at N.H.K.S. and teaching private lessons after school. I've been teaching private lessons for over 10 years. I'm also music director of Kaneohe Covenant Baptist Church. My schedule is mostly full already so I rarely accept new students. I love music and I love sharing it with others through teaching.
EXPERIENCE
My first experiences teaching were in high school but not professionally. I was always showing my friends how to play different licks on the guitar, etc. where I just had a natural tendency to want to share my knowledge with others. I did some payed lessons in college as well as just sharing knowledge with friends. After graduating I began gradually building up my client base as a music teacher. Eventually I reached the point of not being able to accept many new students so I also began teaching at schools in the mornings. I have been teaching for over 10 years now and have experience with all ages and ability levels.
METHODS USED
My approach varies depending on the student. For younger students I usually take a very systematic step by step approach using method books. If the student already knows what they want to learn and has specific goals I try to tailor to their needs.
For guitar students who are starting from scratch I usually begin with the Hal Leonard Guitar method book or give them the option to use a classical method book if they're really interested in classical guitar. For piano I use the Bastien method series and select the first book depending on the student's age.
I can also teach playing by ear to older students who want to skip the fundamentals but I don't recommend it.
LESSON STYLE
I like to make sure that my students are organized. I encourage them to bring a notebook to class to write down what they are supposed to practice. It helps them to stay on task on set goals. I love to see a student who comes in prepared. We usually will start off with some warm up exercise and then get to working on the music. I like to teach musicality so I encourage improvisation, singing, clapping, tapping feet, and other physical body movements to help internalize the beat. I like to teach music theory and understanding the music the student is playing. It's important for a student to understand that the music comes from their mind, and not some notes on a page.
