Hi! My name is Jake K, and I am a clarinet, saxophone, and euphonium instructor. I am passionate about music in general, and I love helping students reach their highest potential. I'm a graduate of Morehead State University, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. Since that time, I have had the pleasure of working with several band programs, all of them achieving great success. I also perform throughout Kentucky and Ohio, and am always striving to improve myself as a musician and an educator.
I began my teaching experience in 2016, when I began work as a band camp instructor during my student teaching semester in college. Since then, I have served as a high school band director for three years before stepping away to pursue other musical opportunities. Despite leaving my position as a band director, I still remain active as an educator. I continue to work with several different programs in Kentucky and Ohio, where I teach clarinet lessons, marching band and drum corps, and jazz ensembles.
I tailor lessons for each individual student based upon their age, ability, and cognition. I am a big believer in repetition, and reinforce fundamentals heavily. For all students, we will work greatly on building good habits right away. We will do exercises for breathing, embouchure, and hand position. From there, we will work on tone quality. As we begin learning notes and rhythms, we will use method books such as Essential Elements, in addition to easy songs for beginners to get comfortable practicing and eventually performing.
As an educator, I strive for patience with students making a good effort. I recognize that certain skill sets will take time to develop, and I make sure that all students are doing the right things as they practice. Between lessons, I set a small list of achievable skills and practices for students to do. These lists are tailored for each individual to grow every week. With each lesson, it is my hope that the students find the joy of music making, and develop a love of music in general that will last them their entire lives.
