Bachelor Degree: University of Massachusetts--Dartmouth
I was born in New Bedford, MA to a musical family. I began piano study at age six and eventually decided to seek a degree in music, with an emphasis in piano performance. My love for the instrument is as a teacher, and it is that love for teaching that brought me to be a classroom teacher of general music for ten years. I have served as a church musician, both at the pipe organ and the piano, and I have also been a choral accompanist for college and community ensembles. I love to see the joy in my students' faces when they accomplish their goals at the instrument.
I have been teaching private piano lessons for about 25 years. Over those years, I have also served as a lower and middle school music teacher. In one position, I created and implemented a piano lab for group piano instruction for grades 4-8. My students have ranged from beginners to advanced, and I have taught children from age 5 through adults in their 80's. Throughout my classroom teaching years, I have always maintained a private studio. Having recently moved to Binghamton, I look forward to teaching new generations of pianists!
I am familiar with most of the teaching methods available, so my choice of teaching method is tailored to the needs of each student. One student may be working with Schaum's Pre-A Book, while another might be starting out with Thompson's Teaching Little Fingers to Play. This is all to say that there isn't one method that is perfect for all students. My experience with so many approaches helps me to give my students the best possible learning experience. Of course, this isn't all about methods! I also teach music history and music theory within the body of each lesson.
While teaching to read music is at the core of my approach, I also encourage my students to improvise, play popular songs by ear, and follow chord charts. I regularly offer student recitals, providing an opportunity for a group experience, peer feedback, and growth in self-confidence at the instrument. My lessons are fun, and I like to mix things up by giving my students both serious and fun pieces to work on. I also like to use technology for music theory games/exercises as well as listening examples.
Amazing Teacher, My two Boys aged 6 & 7 Loved taking Piano Lessons with Mrs. Jacqueline. Both Boys have totally different personalities and ways of understanding music and Mrs. Jacqueline brings fun & creativity to each lesson. She has a loving, kind and patient spirit and was able to connect, encourage and bring out the best in my Boys. We are so blessed to have had a teacher like Mrs. Jacqueline and we miss her dearly!! Without a doubt one of the most enjoyable lesson experiences I've ever had. Incredibly patient, very individualized in lessons, more than willing to listen to input from students and try new things. Effective at teaching students new topics+songs without pushing them overboard. Out of the many teachers I've had in piano, Ms. Maillet has and always will be my favorite.
Ms Jacqueline is an outstanding teacher. Strong and kind! She always inspired me to improve. I wanted to practice. I disciplined myself and looked forward to my weekly lessons. Her enthusiasm and love of music was contagious. She introduced me to various genres of music and diverse styles. Her input encouraged me to reflect and create with structure. Ms. Jacqueline has a unique way of bringing out creativity and the desire to learn and be the best we can.
