I am a flutist, teacher and performer. I want to share my love for music and playing the flute, with all my students and audiences. I have a Bachelor and Master of Music degree and many years of performance and teaching. I continue to seek out coaching from respected professional flutists, because I feel that the better I play, the better I teach. I perform as a member of a flute ensemble. As artistic director, I bring new music to traditional audiences. I love to combine classic works with new pieces that incorporate extended techniques on flutes , as well as interesting concepts and stories.
Teaching is something that I have always done, in addition to performing. I incorporate fundamentals and musicality with every student, but each student learns differently and has different goals. I do not have a set curriculum, I gear the study to the student, what the student needs and wants to accomplish. I encourage students to perform in some way, either on a solo recital of in a chamber ensemble. I hold annual recitals and online students also participate in recitals, if they choose. My primary goal for each student, is for the student to love music, understand music and become a life long supporter of music.
I choose the course of study based on the individual student. Beginners usually start in "Flute 101" or the Blocki Method - Book 1. Really young students start on a small, Nuvo flute, to accommodate size, then graduate to a traditional flute. I have a number of games and projects for young beginners. Adult students learn a lot of repertoire and/or work through etude books to improve fundamentals and musical skills. My goal is to always help the student to achieve goals set while enjoying the process of playing flute.
I teach each student based on their needs and goals. Fundamentals are key to playing well. I always want learning to be fun but effective. I teach the student how to practice to reach goals and help the student set goals. I teach in terms of musicality followed by technicality. Tone is what allows a performer to tell a story, but technique is also key. By developing a strong sense of fundamentals, musicality is easier to achieve. I always have students create a story to illustrate what the music is saying. If they can visualize a scene, color or event, the music flows. That is what music is to me!!
