My name is Jahnvi and I am currently earning my bachelor's degree in Music Education at New York University. I have been teaching private lessons for 3 years now, specializing in voice, piano, and music theory. I grew up singing musical theatre, pop, jazz, classical, and classical Hindustani music from India. My passion for singing soon developed into a passion for instrumental music as I picked up clarinet, flute, piano, and guitar. Along with teaching, I also am an avid performer and enjoy gigging throughout the city. I am incredibly passionate and motivated to teach and work to share my love of music with students.
My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I rose to become section leader of the clarinet section in band and section leader of the alto section in choir. Since then, I have been teaching private lessons to students of all different ages and skill levels, as well as individuals with disabilities. Encouraging practice schedules and routine is something I like to emphasize in younger students. I aim to bring my students individual musical interests into our class as that tends to keep them more engaged.
For beginning students, I prefer to start them on a book based in warming up and getting used to movement in hands if we are playing piano. Throughout my teaching, I incorporate music theory and ear training into my classes as it creates a fantastic bridge to understanding the instrument. As we get used to our new instrument, I will recommend some songs to get started on and allow my students to come to class with ideas and songs that they want to learn how to play or sing. Letting my students pick the songs they want to work on is a big part of my teaching methods.
I truly enjoy watching my students develop a deep and important love for music. I believe the way to facilitate that is to really get to know your students. Some students benefit from organization while others do better with a more relaxed approach. I take the time to understand what each individual needs and I reflect on what I can do to meet them where they are. My lessons come with structure AND flexibility. For me, lessons are more than just learning an instrument or learning how to sing. It is also about developing a deep passion for music in general and becoming well rounded musicians.
