I am an immensely passionate and dedicated musician who loves sharing the joy of music with others. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2018 with a Dual Degree in Jazz Composition and Saxophone Performance. I play sax, guitar, and compose most of the music for my original prog fusion group, LON, with whom I have performed all over New England, as well as playing over 100 gigs a year with various groups, ranging from wedding bands, original projects, and jazz bands. In terms of music styles, I love and play everything from John Coltrane to Dream Theater!
I started teaching privately over 5 years ago, from my college apartment bedroom, and ever since I have been consistently teaching. Some students come and go, but I have some that have remained over the years. I believe that music is all about inspiration, which then leads to motivation. If I as the teacher can find something that inspires a student to be motivated to improve on their instrument, then I've done my job! I encourage students to find ways outside the lessons to perform and put their skills to the test, whether that's through school auditions, going to local jam sessions, booking their own gigs, and more.
For beginners, I put a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of music, such as getting to know the staff, time signatures, how to construct a major scale, etc. I will also introduce the student to intervals, which are the basic building blocks of western music. The student will also begin basic ear training, by learning to recognize certain intervals by ear, and also learning to sing and play on their instrument when given a reference pitch. As the student enters an intermediate phase, we will begin discussing harmonic concepts, learning to improvise, and also learning repertoire along the way. I will always gauge a student's ability and learning pace, so as to keep the stoke maxed out at all times!
I have always felt such a deep sense of satisfaction when a student finally nails a difficult tune or passage, or is introduced to something in music that blows their mind. Nothing is better than inspiring a student to grow and progress, and that has always been at the core of my teaching style. I always want to strike the balance between constructive criticism and praising accomplishment in our lessons, as I understand that realistically not everyone wants to play music professionally. Even if I can inspire someone to turn music into a habitual hobby, I find that incredibly rewarding.
