I am a motivated instructor who is extremely passionate about music, learning, and having a great time while doing both! I have taught students ranging from 3 years old to 65 years old. My approach is that we work hard, but have a really fun time accomplishing our goals. I like to engage students quickly by showing them that they can learn to play something on their instrument very quickly, but then we dive in to the theory of what we just played. I have a laid-back personality who is easy to get along with, but I will also help push you towards your goals in an appropriate manner.
My wife and I recently moved to Bellingham from Denver, CO where I was a teacher at the American Music School for approximately two years. I've played in rock bands for many years and traditional bands since I was in my youth. I attended the Community College of Denver and had many credit hours worth of training in theory, electronic music, guitar instruction, vocal instruction, sight-singing, music appreciation, and ensemble performance. Additionally, I served as a board member for the Playground Music Ensemble which performs modern chamber music and music education in the Denver area.
For beginners, either children or adults, I like to begin by teaching you to play an easy song that is recognizable so that you are excited and engaged in your instrument right away. From there we dive in to a beginning instructional book that teaches you the theory of what you are actually playing. Then we take those concepts and expand in to more difficult music, polish your skills, and have a blast during the entire process. We can learn any type of music you want. Rock, pop, punk, country, hip hop!
Music is something that can bring two completely different people together. You may see the world entirely different from someone else, but can be bonded by the power of music. Therefore, I truly believe that no music is bad music. Each song is an expression of the songwriter and how they were feeling at the moment they wrote the tune. For example, I grew up loving punk rock and distorted songs and still gravitate towards that style of music. However, over the years I've learned that a lot of techniques in country music can be applied to rock music which makes my playing and songwriting that much more interesting and well-rounded.
