I have been playing drums for 18 years. In that time, I've learned a lot that I would like to pass on. I was in my high school marching band, I've taken lessons on jazz drumming and the Moller method, I've taken various musical, engineering, and production classes in college. I've done a great deal of independent study, and I am always looking for new ways to improve my skills and techniques. In the past I have won a few drum solo competitions, I've been in many bands. I've played on stages all over the Houston/Galveston area, and I write and produce my own music.
my teaching experience is admittedly small, I've been giving lessons part-time for about a year now. the only way I will learn to become a more effective teacher is through real world experience. although my experience is low, I am confident I can help you or your child become a better musician. I've been playing long enough to know what works and what doesn't. My passion to elevate my craft has led me down paths of learning that few people travel. my excitement and love for my instrument results in a level of professionalism that will garner the results we seek.
We all know most children and even some adults hate eating vegetables, even though it is beneficial for their well-being. The things I teach are like that. I first start off with hand posture: simply learning to hold the sticks correctly eludes even some adults. no matter how far a student has advanced, I always watch their hands. a good hand posture will help the students' sound, as well as help prevent injury. Some people assume drumming is about brute force, but the masters are very relaxed and calm when they play. they make the sticks do the work. This concept can take years of practice at very slow tempos. But eventually the hard work is rewarded. I use a combination of the Moeller method and the Push-Pull technique.
I remember being in grade school. I only wanted to learn things that interested me. One of those things was drumming. Since I was genuinely passionate about it, I had no problem working through hours of tedious practice to learn the skills I have today. I can still lose track of time while practicing. This is what is required to reach higher levels of any endeavor. My goal is to show my students why they need to practice what I'm teaching. If they have a good enough reason to strive for these skills, they won't need to be told to practice.
