Bachelor Degree: Chapman University Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music
Master Degree: University of Southern California Thornton School of Music
I am passionate about piano and music education. I believe that a good music education unlocks skills and talents that cross over into other disciplines including S.T.E.M. subjects and even athletics. Music lessons are also a great way to teach personal responsibility and the importance of preparation. I have a bachelors and masters degree in classical piano from Chapman University in Orange County and University of Southern California. Since graduating I have performed in Southern California and internationally as a solo and collaborative pianist.
I began teaching music in 2010 while I was still an undergraduate student. Since then I have taught music lessons of all kinds to all ages in community music schools, in public schools, in student’s homes, and in my home studio. I teach students as young as 5 years old and have a lot of experience teaching adults as well. I encourage regular practice and goal setting as a way to realizing results. Parent or guardian involvement in lessons is also encouraged. I have experience teaching Royal Conservatory of Music and ABRSM examinations. I also encourage students to perform multiple times a year in recitals.
For beginning and intermediate lessons I use Faber Piano Adventures. Once a student shows the ability to work independently I move on to more standard teaching literature that follows the Royal Conservatory levels from preparatory to level 10. I use theory as a way to enhance lessons depending on the seriousness of the student. I also incorporate technique and scales as a supplement when a student shows motivation and adequate practice. I am always happy to take suggestions on pieces and different styles to learn from students and parents.
I praise effort and a good attitude! I know that learning music is like learning a new language along with hand-eye-ear coordination. Positive reinforcement and clear guidance is a must. I also encourage parent and family involvement with lessons so a student feels the support and environment necessary for long term interest. I teach each student with individual attention and realistic goal setting fit for the student and parent’s interests. With exams and performances I stress good preparation, confidence, and ownership of what the student produces.
