MM, Universityof New Orleans, Trumpet performance BA, Xavier University New Orleans, Libral Arts Music
Overview:
I am a passionate trumpet stylist, composer and instructor who loves teaching and working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated from Xavier University in 1993 with a Libral Arts Bachelor with a focus in trumpet performance. Performing in my birth place New Orleans has been the greatest experience of my musical career. I performed with the LPO in a concert performance of the music of African-american composer Adolfus Hailstork while a student at Xavier. In 1996-1997, while a graduate student at the University of New Orleans, I perform as lead trumpeter with the big band under the direction of Mr. Ellis Marsalis who was chair over Jazz Studies at that time. I studied jazz composition with Herald Baptiste and performed with the tradiation jazz combo under the direction of Mr. Don Vappie. I co-founded and performed with Westend Brass Quintet, performed with Creole Serenaders at Le Petitte' Theatre in a presentation of the big band music of Jellyroll Morton. I presently perform with my own band in local venues in Lexington.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching career started in 1994 at Herald J Keller Elementary School while a graduate student at Loyola University. I taught trumpet lessons, general music courses and directed the childrens choral groups. I went on to teach high school as the Band Director at Walter L. Colhen High School in 1998 and continued to teach trumpet lessons. My family and I moved to Lexington Kentucky in 2005 where I continue to perform and teach trumpet lessons locally. In 2014, I taught music history at Bluegrass Community and Technical College as adjunct faculty for the Humanities Department.
METHODS USED
My method of teaching trumpet for begginers and advanced students is to first make certain the embouchure is correctly formed, the breathing is correct and the instrument is held correctly. I'll have the student play for me to detect any areas of concern and consequently I generate lesson plans accordingly. I will introduce drills, etudes and solo pieces at the given time of apparent progress in the areas of concern. I will make the learning experience fun and interesting, however I will require the students diligience in accomplishing the goals of trumpet performance which are expressive and beautiful performances.
LESSON STYLE
The role of an instructor is to facilitate the curriculum from the perspective of making the student understand their place in the continuum of the course material being taught. For example, I taught music history with a firm understanding of timeline, events and major human figures involved. However, I focused on making the student deeply familiar with the given time-periods by discussing in depth the human activities involving societal norms, cultural sensibilities and most certainly we analyzed the music; why it sounded the way it did and what were the cultural intentions, via expressivity of the performers and composers. As an instructor, I know that the ability to convey the practicalities of a given subject matter to the student with great clarity and care is essential in their comprehending and appreciating the learning experience. My job as an instructor is to facilitate impeccably the curriculum along with providing the answers to the student’s question of how a subject matter relates to them as a student. For me, to teach is to enhance the human experience of the student via comprehensive discourse in class, and projects and tests constructed around critical thinking and great practice habits.
