Overview:
I am an individual and group music instructor with a background in music education and music performance. I'm a founding member of Implosion Percussion, a professional percussion ensemble focusing on contemporary works, a music festival called New Music on the Bayou, and the Founder and former executive director of the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston in Ruston, LA. I am experienced working with students with learning disorders and Behavioral concerns, such as anxiety and autism. I own a five-octave Demorrow marimba for lessons at my studio.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. Most of my students study the fundamentals of piano and voice, and then Branch into either percussion, guitar, strings, or brass, as they develop their interests. I tailor my Approach To Each student's needs.
METHODS USED
I tailor a student's curriculum to their musical goals and needs, while making sure that I am instilling the fundamentals needed for pursuing music at the college scholarship level. Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. To accomplish this, I use standard materials that are often available online and are used by college and University music programs around the world. I have a variety of method books in different styles and from different time periods, and will select, assign, and provide a Method book to a student based on the student's goals. I do not require purchases of my students, but will make recommendations upon request.
LESSON STYLE
I believe music instruction should be thrilling and rewarding, and leave the student eager to play more! Maintaining the smile that comes from the joy of expanding skills and creating a unique world of sound is my calling, and I believe every student deserves the chance to experience that. Music can be used to develop social skills and expand self-awareness, as well as two stimulate both right and left brain thinking. Music education is highly effective for connecting the mind and body and I use listening skills, posture and breathing, voice and ear training and a variety of fun instruments to keep my students engaged.
