I have a strong love of music. I received my Bachelor of Music from East Carolina University and my Master of Music from Anderson University. I have been playing the saxophone for twenty-four years. I have also been a public school general music/band director for five years. I have been teaching saxophone for about twelve years. I am a full-time school teacher and professional musician. I have performed at many weddings, churches, private parties, and music venues ranging from New York City to Texas. I strive to bring out the best in every student. Without music, the world would be miserable. I feel like I must share my experience and knowledge with whoever shows a passion for music.
I have been giving music lessons for over twelve years. I have taught many churches, pop, and R&B musicians music theory and applied lessons. I have taught in the public, charter, and private school systems for over a decade. I am a highly skilled classical and jazz musician. Classical and Jazz music is what I emphasize in the public school system, but I have lots of experience in beach band, gospel, funk, and much more. I encourage my students to perform in talent shows, competitions, churches, and other music venues. My job as a music educator is to provide the best experience possible for my students.
I like to customize my lesson plans based on the student's needs. It also depends on the style of music that is being learned. I typically like to start with the Rubank method books. These books follow a progressive sequence of beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. However, this is not necessary; the concept of these books is to get a grasp of the fundamentals. I also provide many fundamental exercises I have created and used in my daily practice. After fundamentals are introduced, I like to go into style-specific concepts.
Presentation is everything when it comes to teaching. My teaching style varies from student to student. After teaching in the public school system for five years, I have learned that no two students are the same. I have learned that presentation and variety is the key to successful learning. My set goals are realistic and encourage the student to strive for excellence. Although I have a Master's degree, I feel like a lifetime music student. That is why I like to keep an open mind about what fuels my students.
