Overview:
I'm a classical singer with a Bachelor of Music in Education degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Opera is my first love, but I also teach a wide variety of styles (musical theater, pop, country) as well as general vocal skills and musicianship. I perform in professional Opera (Austin Opera) and light Opera productions (G.S.S.A.). I also sing in more Folk/Americana styles on a regular basis for a local church. I was an intrumentalist (percussion) before focusing on voice at U.T., and I enjoy working with experienced musicians who want to try singing for the first time. I love to teach all ages and experience levels in voice. I also love teaching piano and have been doing so for more than 10 years. I'm best with beginner and intermediate piano students, children and adult beginners.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching voice and piano, both privately and in public schools, for 12 years in the Austin area. I have taught all ages and styles and am open to any kind of music. I believe in practice and routine as a foundation to learning, but also improvisation and experimentation. I learn best across multiple media and I LOVE using the internet and a variety of applications to supplement my student's studies. My goal for all students is a very rounded music education, with great fundamental techniques and practice habits for their instrument.
METHODS USED
For Piano students: I teach from Faber and Faber (age appropriate volumes) and encourage a disciplined home practice routine that includes a practice log and weekly goals. Solo pieces added over time. Performances - even if only an in home recital for a few family members and friends - are encouraged about once a semester. For voice students: I teach very tailored lessons to suit individual goals, even if the goal is just to sing better in the shower. Lessons include voice and breathing exercises, posture work, listening assignments, song repertoire, and some training in musicianship which will be determined based on the student's prior experience. I'm going to teach you in the style you prefer and help you set and achieve individual goals for your voice.
LESSON STYLE
I like a light, fun atmosphere during lessons, one that reflects the learning style and personality of each student. There are some not-so-fun things about learning music (practice schedules and repetition) but there are plenty of resources out there to help students stay interested and motivated. I like to reward accomplishments (stickers are always awesome) and offer opportunities for improvement. I work for a positive and balanced experience for every student.
