I am very passionate about my music and have enjoyed it ever since I was a little girl. Music has always been a part of my life ever since I can remember and have been surrounded by music of different genres. I started taking lessons around the age of seven as my grandma always saw me playing around on it at that age. I have played for different churches such as playing at mine or filling in for my teacher at her church. I played for my first paid wedding by the time I was nineteen playing. Since then I have played for weddings as well as some funerals. I am currently playing with the praise band at my church that I go to now.
My teaching experience started back when I was a teenager and I provided lessons from my home. I have also taught in my church on occasion. I love seeing kids as well as adults learning to play music as I feel as they get enjoyment out of it just as I did when I first started learning to play. When I teach I like to recommend regular practice not just with kids but with adults as well as it builds progress when they come in for their lessons. I also feel that students learning classical is a great starting point as it does get more complicated down the road, but I also feel that learning more popular music such as what is out now, is also a great starting point as this will allow students to see how classical and popular music differentiates.
With teaching students, I like to start them out with Dozen A Day as this helps warm up their fingers and hands to get ready for the music in their lesson. After that I will start them on going over the name of the notes that are on the piano as well as the scales. I like to work with them on the basics such as the note values, the different music symbols such as the treble and bass clefs, what is on each measure of music. When starting them out on music I like to teach from beginner books such as the ones I grew up with that will have some little tunes that they can learn as well as go along with teaching them the basics and what each note means and represents.
I really enjoy seeing my students enjoy learning music as that brings me back to my memories of learning. I find it is important to allow students to work at their own pace so they will not become frustrated and lose interest in what I am teaching them. With that I feel it is important to take as much time as the students needs in order for them to grasp what they are being taught as I feel it will hurt them down the road later when they start to get into playing the music as it will get harder down the road. It is important for students to grasp the basics of learning to play the piano as this will build a good foundation for learning the more intermediate or advanced music down the road.
