I have had a long and wonderful career as a music educator and am now retired, but my passion for teaching music is still strong. I recently moved from Upstate NY to Fort Mill, SC and am excited to open a studio in my new home. My background is in instrumental music and choral/ classroom. It has been a delight to be involved in both band and choral musical activities. I was a NYSSMA woodwind adjudicator for twenty five years and enjoyed conducting all-county band. I have been a church musician for many years, was involved in the musical activities of my community and am looking forward to establishing myself musically in my new hometown of Fort Mill.
I was an educator in the Seneca Falls Central Schools for 38 years where I first became an instrumental music teacher. I taught woodwind lessons grades 5-12 and conducted elementary and middle school bands. I coached high school woodwind groups and was assistant marching band director, as well as woodwind adjudicator for the NY State School Music Association.
When I became a classroom and choral director, I attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY to attain my Orff Schlwerk Master level training. I established the Stanton School Afro-Brazilian Drum ensembles, the Orff Ensembles and three choruses. I have also taught at the collegiate level at Eisenhower College for 8 years. I played clarinet with the Auburn Chamber Orchestra and the flute and piano as a soloist for community events, weddings and church services. I have always had a private piano and woodwind studio in my home and look forward to teaching private students once again. Working one on one with my music students is so rewarding and I feel that I have a talent for helping my students to discover the joy of making music. I strive to bring out the musical best in my students, whether they prepare for performance or play for their own enjoyment.
In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. I like the Bastien Piano Basics series for the younger student but am amenable to using other method books depending on the students interests, age and goals. The private music lesson always involves a custom music lesson plan!
I have a somewhat fast paced, exciting music teaching style but am cognizent and respectful of the need for each student to progress at his or her individual pace. I like to engage the student fully in the process of learning, and as there are several different learning modalities, I feel it important to establish which style the student most identifies with. In this manner, each student will have the opportunity to attain the best musical outcomes and allow for optimal enjoyment of playing the instrument. Engaging the students in active participation is crucial in all learning modalities as is discovering what motivates him or her to excel. Teaching is not a static endeavor, and requires fluidity and flexibility on the part of the teacher. I take pride in my ability to analyze and monitor the learning situation and regularly modify as need be. Children are natural music makers and it is so important to keep that joy of learning, alive and well!
