I have been playing the piano since I was about five or six years old. I love music. It calms me and soothes me. I have been teaching music since I had learned enough to teach to someone else. I have been giving lessons from my home since I was young. I have performed in numerous recitals as well. I believe that you should always keep learning and challenge yourself. My studio is at my home. I have a piano instead of a keyboard. I also have dogs, but they will be kept in a separate room during the lessons or outside.
My teaching experience dates back to about twelve years old. I have taught my cousins, their friends, neighbors, older adults, and children as young as six. I learned from various instructors during my childhood and teenage years. I even gave lessons in college to help fund my trip to Spain. I have continued to give lessons up until last month to students around Georgia. I like to play fun stuff, but I also realize that there should be a variety of things that you learn so that you are well versed in music.
For beginning students I tend to use John Thompson books. Normally I start with Teaching Little Fingers To Play. I progress from there with the books. This is what I learned as a child, and it works. I also use Julie McIntosh Johnson's books for theory. I thoroughly believe in theory learning. As the child progresses and learns more notes and gets more comfortable with sight reading, I introduce Hanon for dexterity. I do the same thing with my adult students. The main book I use for the adult students is the Bastien books. I also let me students pick out a fun book to learn music from.
My teaching style basically is to just have fun. I tailor my lessons with the students based on what they want to learn. For example, if they want to learn Jazz and Blues and Disney to accompany the Hanon, Theory, and Thompson, then they will learn that as well. Basically, it's just whatever additional genres of music the student wants to learn in addition to what they are required to learn from my lessons, which is Hanon as they progress, Theory, and Thompson or Bastien depending on what level or age they are.
