Bachelor Degree: Western Washington University 2015
Hi, I'm Jane! I teach all levels of saxophone along with beginning/intermediate clarinet. I am also open to teaching beginning piano and ukulele.
I graduated from Western Washington University in 2015 with a music minor and a self-designed Fairhaven concentration entitled Music, Inequality & Resistance. Since then I've continued teaching lessons and performed, toured, and recorded with several groups, including Hot Damn Scandal, The Pazific, MarchFourth, and Lucky Brown.
Likes: all-ages shows, exploring and fostering connections between music & community
Dislikes: boring/stressful lessons
I first started teaching saxophone lessons while in high school in Ferndale, WA. I was still taking private lessons at the time; as my skill level advanced, my teacher saw my potential as a teacher and started referring some beginning students to me. Throughout college, I gained experience working with youth and adult students of all levels.
As I gained more experience teaching and continued my own musical studies, I became a better, more confident teacher. Since graduating in 2015, I have begun teaching clarinet and am now teaching more weekly students than ever before.
I like to start by asking about a student about their prior experience (if any), interests and goals on their instrument. With my students, I generally start by tackling basics like healthy breathing and posture, producing good tone, note-reading, and rhythm. Depending on students interests, we may then gradually incorporate more advanced techniques such as playing by ear, learning longer, more complex classical or jazz pieces, music theory, and improvisation. Some of my favorite books to work with are the Rubank Method and Lennie Niehaus’ jazz exercises and etudes.
I encourage students to embrace a fun, focused and low-stress approach to their instrument. I am all about working with my students to discover their unique interests and goals - whether that's nailing their jazz band audition, joining a rock band, preparing a classical piece for a competition, exploring creativity and improvisation, or simply playing at home for their own enjoyment. I’m grateful to work with each of my unique students, and to be able to share my passion for music with students of all ages, all backgrounds, and all experience levels.
