Overview:
Teaching guitar is one of the great joys of my life. I really enjoy meeting people of all different ages and backgrounds, and helping them to discover how music fits into their lives. I have no preference on a students goals, and I am completely fine teaching beginners, casual players, or students who would like a more serious approach. I prepare lesson plans for each of my students and I try hard to keep the curriculum fun and relative to the students interest. All of my students are welcome to participate in the student recitals I hold twice a year, although these are not mandatory.
Let's work together to make music a part of your life!
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching part time while going to school. I took some time off to travel and focus on my performance career but have taught full time at The Guitar Store in Greenwood for the past 7 years. I have played guitar professionally in the Seattle area for the past 12 years. My main genre is progressive rock, although I love Jazz, Pop, blues, Calypso and many other forms of music! I also teach ukulele and songwriting as well. Aside from being a performer and a teacher, I have taken over a decade of lessons myself on various instruments including guitar, piano, and trombone. I feel knowing what it is like to be a student helps to guide my teaching strategies and connect better with my others who are trying to learn.
METHODS USED
For students who have played an instrument prior to our lessons, I try and shape a curriculum entirely based upon the specific goals of the student, and I rarely use text books although I use a lot of exercises and educational material when appropriate. I feel learning to play and transcribe songs and solos to increase a students self reliance and confidence is my most important job. Most students come to me looking for structure so I try and provide a clear path to their goals. For students with no prior music experience I use text books, and exercises to strengthen their technique, expose them to musical ideas, and give them a foundation for basic theory. After that is accomplished I move into a curriculum that is more personal to their specific goals.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is structured primarily on learning to play by ear with light theory instruction. For advanced and more serious students, I am a huge theory nerd and I really enjoy teaching a more technical approach as well. My philosophy is to improve a student's skills by nurturing each person's specific interest and goals. I do not find it effective to try and force my own taste in music on my students, although I do make suggestions based on skills a student is trying to acquire. My main goal is to build confidence and show students that music is for everyone and is really fun! As long as it is fun I believe anyone can achieve any goal they set out to achieve.
