Masters of Education - Educational Administration - DePaul University
I'm a professional educator with a passion for music. I hold a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from DePaul University, and have studied guitar, mandolin and music theory at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. I've played mandolin and guitar in several stringbands, and currently perform with Chain Station (chainstation.com), based in Denver, CO. Aside from guitar and mandolin, I also play the fiddle and ukulele. I provide private lessons and group classes on all of these instruments out of my home studio in Denver, CO and at Swallow Hill Music, with three locations in Metro Denver.
I began teaching private lessons in Chicago in 2002, while in an Educational Administration Masters Program at DePaul University. I quickly discovered the gratification that comes from sharing and teaching music. I've taught students of all ages and abilities and enjoy the variation in the lessons within this scope. I have taught in conventional school settings as well as from the road while on tour. I currently provide private lessons and group classes on several instruments, both at Swallow Hill Music in Denver, CO and to students worldwide via my website: JarettsJammers.com
I provide individualized instruction with a theoretical focus. I want students to understand the music that they play. I view music as a language and believe in the importance of being able to manipulate it to convey a message to the listener. I allow students to choose the songs they learn and couple them with technical exercises to improve dexterity and familiarity with the instrument. I believe in a "do no harm" philosophy, where my primary goal is to have students enjoy music on their instrument without being overly burdened with "homework" and "practice."
I have fun with my students. They learn to play songs that they want to play, and I provide theoretical and technical instruction within that framework. Learning to play an instrument is a lifelong endeavor which provides both challenge and satisfaction. I'm an active listener and seek to understand each student's needs and goals. Education is a two-way street, and I learn from my students as they learn from me. Music is a language we can all understand, regardless of age, ability or style, and it has the ability to connect people from all backgrounds.
