Missouri Southern State University, Music Business
I'm in love with music and the ability to play and teach the instrument known as the drum set to any willing person! At the age of 29, I'm blessed to say I have been playing for over 25 years. 10 of those years has been professionally. I've had the luxury of playing alongside some of the best musicians in the world, many who are internationally renown. I also have my own band, which has garnered me the opportunity as a leader to play on platforms such as the Richmond Jazz Festival. I love sowing into kids and watching their development on the drums! My lessons are fun, but I also require quality effort. With effort, results WILL come no matter how long it takes!
I have been teaching for 10 years on various levels. I've taught part-time in high schools as a college student, music stores, as well as privately. I love to build a curriculum that is specific to each student's needs. I.e. I like to work with students and help them reach the goals that they have set for themselves. As we continue towards that journey, I create new good exercises to attack problem areas that the student may have along the ride towards their goal. I like to instill confidence in my students, and receive great joy when I see them accomplish something that they did't believe would be possible at one point. Everyone is welcomed to study with me no matter the age!
I have an arsenal of books I may work through or recommend for students from beginner to the advanced player. However, my lessons are customized to fit each students needs. The exercises or books I may work from are usually recommended to the student after assessing where they are skill-wise, what their end goal may be, or based on what tools they like that will help them retain the information the best. Some examples are a few book's such as Ted Reed's Syncopation, or George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control (two drumming bibles.)
I love adjusting to fit the needs of the student and am thrilled when a student turns this craft into a love or hobby! That is always my goal, to make sure that music is fun. That should be the most important facet. If it remains fun, I can always adjust my curriculum to tailor to the needs of the student. By doing so, I get to also grow as a teacher and human being! I love trying new things or techniques to fit a young (or old!) musicians' thought process or approach to music. These are the times where the lessons are the most valuable.
