Overview:
I am an inventive and experienced guitar performer as well as a motivated instructor. In 2017 I graduated from Gordon College with a degree in classical guitar performance under the study of Robert Bekkers and David Patterson of New England Conservatory. I have since moved to Rhode Island for graduate school. I am currently involved in the University of Rhode Island Classical Guitar Ensemble under Adam Levin, and have participated in master classes with Elliot Fisk, and Roland Dyens.
I began my study of guitar when I was ten years old playing acoustic and electric guitar from there began experimenting and studying many different styles including pop, rock, an some jazz. My classical training has expanded my understanding of guitar as a whole and has allowed me to transfer many classical skills to other genres such as jazz and rock. I have played weddings, open houses, band gigs, and events. I am excited to teach new students who are passionate about the guitar, no matter what style!
EXPERIENCE
As a teenager I began teaching young kids very introductory acoustic guitar methods. Later on in college, my music curriculum mandated teaching lessons on the primary instrument while receiving feedback from faculty and attending teaching workshops. I have participated in master classes with Eliot Fisk and Roland Dyens, and have attended master classes with world-famous flamenco, jazz, fusion, and classical guitar players. Currently I participate in the University of Rhode Guitar Ensemble and regularly perform and assist new members. Note: I am comfortable teaching all levels of classical guitar from introductory to advanced and college level players. For other styles such as rock, acoustic, jazz etc. I would be able to teach up to the intermediate level.
METHODS USED
For students interested in classical guitar I have a large selection of etudes, and technical studies as well as most of the traditional compositions and methods books. I typically have a student perform a piece they have been working on for me so I can get a sense of their playing style and can plan out what things to work on to hone their skills.
For brand new students to the guitar, I teach them about the instrument itself and its history. I follow the classic Hal Leonard method books to begin and then, depending on the students goals and musical tastes move on to other books and works.
For Jazz students I use The Real Book Vol. 1 For most students a fundamental part of understanding music and the instrument itself is music theory. Students will be given some basic music theory and reading skills to reinforce their guitar training. The most important thing to me is that the students learn and play music that they want to study.
LESSON STYLE
Every student works at their own pace and I allow for a lot of flexibility in my lessons. However, once the student has communicated their long term goals for the guitar, realistic goals are set between each lesson. I assign projects to work on between each lessons usually a mix of technical practice, such as left hand and right hand techniques, and musical works the student is interested in. I find that students work well when they are working on things that interest them. Using this, I can successfully adjust weekly lessons to their needs.
