Bachelor Degree: University of Miami
2016- Outstanding Student Teacher at University of Miami
2016- Outstanding Music Education Senior at the University of Miami
I am a music teacher in the Central Florida area! I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music from the University of Miami and my principal instrument is Voice (various styles). But, I have also played flute & piccolo for several years, and also play guitar, ukulele, and basic piano/keyboard. In college I toured to Europe and New York with the top choir, played multiple instruments in the marching band, and sang in a professional choir on campus. I teach music to various age in a catholic school, and have also conducted adult choirs and taught private lessons to high school ages.
My teaching experience started in college as I taught group music classes in outreach programs and in internships. I now teach as young as preschool up to 8th grade on a regular basis. But, I also have experience teaching adults and high school students through directing adult church choirs and teaching private lessons prior to my current position. I have also taught students how to create music ALONE (improvising a solo, singing as a cantor, etc.), AND how to perform with a GROUP, as the two techniques differ! It is amazing to see students of all ages progress in the instruments they are passionate it in, and it inspires me to teach better every time!
Any time I teach, I make sure to plan every lesson so that the student(s) can progress as far as possible every time they are learning with me. With school-age students, I use the Orff Schulwerk approach often, incorporating their own ideas into the lesson and having them learn through various senses (imagery, movement, games, etc.). When teaching older students and especially in Voice, I make sure the student is giving feedback back to me on how they feel they are progressing throughout the lesson. How did that higher note feel when it you sang it just now? How did that phrase feel differently than before now that you took a bigger breath? This helps them remember how to continue their progress in the future and when they practice without me!
My teaching style involves the student being able to measure their growth and assess what they can do to continue their growth. I make sure students practice on a regular basis and at the end of lessons, I have them repeat back to me what they need to continue learning. This helps them practice on their own without me in between weekly classes. When an improvement happens during the lesson, I acknowledge it right away (with younger students, I also use a visual, such as stars, so they can see their progress) and have the student say out loud what made it a good run through so they can continue to perform that way!
