I'm Jasmine, but you can call me Jas or Jassie! I'm a performer local to the San Francisco Bay Area, and I love helping other vocalists achieve their vocal goals. I started teaching piano in 2016 then realized I loved teaching my primary instrument, voice. As a Filipina-American, karaoke was very common at my family parties. My love of music from a young age led me to get my Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance in 2021 and pursue my Master's degree in Vocal Performance this coming fall. I've performed in musicals around the East Bay, participated in many vocal competitions, done opera scenes programs in college and Alaska, sung back up for Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban, and I've been a worship leader at my local church since 2014. Whether I'm singing pop, R&B, opera, musical theatre, or worship music, I just love making music with other people. I want to help you do the same!
I started teaching voice lessons in early 2016 to young students from 6 to 15 years old. I then worked at the Willow Glen Music School from 2019-2020 to teach voice and piano to students from 4 to 70 years old. Since 2020, I've been teaching online vocal lessons to singers from 14 to 50 years old. I have also done a few vocal master classes for various high school choirs and church worship teams to teach vocal technique. I still take weekly voice lessons for musical theatre and opera to make sure I'm staying in tip-top shape for my students!
When I teach my students, I allow them to choose songs (even original ones they've written) they are interested in singing. I know when I'm assigned a song I'm not fond of, I'm less likely to take the time to practice it during the week! During our lessons, I take the time to warm up their voices and bodies thoroughly before we start singing any repertoire. Singing is a full body experience, and I teach my students to experience that as soon as they work with me! When I work on songs with them, I help them improve their vocal technique by using any methods that they will understand for their own bodies. Because we can't simply touch and manipulate our vocal cords to make sound, my job is to help my students visualize how their body moves and feels when they make a healthy, beautiful sound. One of my favorite parts of the lesson process is when the songs are completely memorized and we can work on the emotional side of them. All songs have emotions, and it's up to us as performers to communicate them to an audience. I've found that my students have lots of fun in their lessons and experience significant growth when they put in the work!
I try to make my lessons fun but challenging enough for there to be growth! There are days when our voices don't work as well as we'd like them to. I want my students to know that that's completely normal. Us singers have to learn vocal technique to help support ourselves on our "vocally-bad days" and to keep our only pair of vocal cords healthy at all times. If I notice a student is getting frustrated or hitting a wall with their voice, we may take a break to work on more technical things. This could be marking the music, talking about the story and emotions of the music, or discussing new goals. At the end of the day, these are my students' lessons. My job is to serve them in any way they need me to.
Jasmine is a great singing instructor! Not only did she make it enjoyable to learn how to sing but she always made sure I was comfortable. This is my first time learning how to sing, Jasmine would let me choose a certain song or genre and help me with my vocals. Making sure I reached my full potential.
Jasmine is amazing! I was honestly hesitant in taking lessons just because I felt like I had to be good enough to take lessons with her. She made me so comfortable. Taking lessons with her has definitely given me the confidence to come out of my “singing closet” and to genuinely enjoy the beauty of music. You won’t regret learning from her! So worth it!
I had the pleasure of being Jasmine’s voice student for 5 years. I can undeniably say that she is the best voice teacher I could ask for! Jasmine has a kind, encouraging teaching method that always created a safe space for me in lessons. She truly believes in her students’ capabilities and talent. I always felt comfortable making mistakes and asking for room for improvement from Jasmine, which is arguably one of the most important qualities in a voice teacher! I love that Jasmine always allowed me to drive the direction of my voice journey. She prioritized the skills, genres, and techniques I wanted to work on. Jasmine gave me the tools to achieve the progress I was looking for. I loved getting to perfect my favorite songs from the radio and musicals, but I also greatly valued the new pieces Jasmine showed me to expand my skill set. I’m now in college, and I’m not pursuing a career in music. I never planned to either. But Jasmine — her lessons and the confidence they gave me — motivated me to continue my love for singing, despite not pursuing it professionally. She gave me a gift that I will forever be grateful for!
