Bachelor Degree: Miami University of Ohio
I started playing the saxophone in the 5th grade. In 2011, I graduated from Miami University with Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. After working in education as a substitute teacher for 6+ years, I am pursuing a career change. However, I still have a deep passion for music and the saxophone. In addition to performing with local community ensembles, I enjoy working with beginning and improving musicians. Students will find me friendly and upbeat, but also a straight-shooter who will coach them to musical enjoyment and success.
Since obtaining my degree, I have taught music in many different capacities. I have worked with groups as well as individuals on all aspects of musicianship. Regular, consistent practice is the foundation of progress and will be encouraged for all of my students. To keep things fun and engaging, a healthy mix of music styles will be covered. Over time, I will get to know my students and their musical interests and desires for the future, and plan accordingly. Wish to prepare for a competition or recital? Let's do it! Need some extra help with your concert music? You got it! Improvisation? Sounds great! (You're never too young to improv.)
For most students, I use the Rubank Method books as a foundation for basic fundamentals of the instrument. I use Jamey Aebersold's books as a foundation for jazz and popular music when students are ready. After that, I like giving my students individual work that is tailored to their needs like solos, jazz tunes, and more. I also challenge my students to take control of their learning by being resourceful. Even if you're short on funds, there are tools everywhere that can be utilized to make playing music engaging and fun. I'm very eager to share those with future students.
Every student is different. My experience has prepared me for that. I am encouraging, but also patient. My instruction will be tailored to each individual student's needs, interests, and desires so that they can progress on their own musical journey at their own pace. Most importantly, I want to encourage my students to take their talents out of the practice room and into the world whenever they can. Whether it's taking a solo to a contest, joining a community band, or performing for their parents in their living room, my students will be encouraged to have a lifelong love of music.
