I am a very well rounded musician. I have performed in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to an appearance on ABC's All My Children. I have performed on every brass instrument with the exception of French Horn. I have taught as many as 40 Piano Students a week. I am fluent in Jazz Improvisation as well as more traditional Classical music. I am very proficient in Music Theory and believe it can be a huge benefit to all musicians. I play Low Brass Instruments, Piano and Bass. I also enjoy composing music for film a great deal.
I began teaching right out of High School. My Band Director hired me to teach the Summer after I graduated. I was a Full Time Band Director in the 1999-2000 School year while still in College. I have taught in Public and Private Schools from Elementary through University. I have also taught private lessons for decades now. I enjoy seeing growth in real time. Teaching can be so rewarding that way. Seeing students progress is very gratifying. I love when students get a new piece of music and it seems nearly impossible. I enjoy this because I know what they are capable of and I love being a part of that journey.
I believe giving students a strong foundation in the fundamentals is key for success. Rhythm and the ability to keep time are essential in all styles across the board. Music Theory is something I teach in every lesson regardless of the instrument I am teaching and at all age levels. On Piano I teach the Faber Curriculum as well as the Alfred Books. These books both incorporate music theory so well from the very beginning. I tend to end almost every lesson with some sort of Jazz Improvisation. Students need to feel the joy of being creative!
I enjoy motivating without fear or guilt. I push students to grow and redefine what they are capable of. I love to see students progress from lesson to lesson. My all time favorite quote in lessons is "in Music nothing is difficult it is just unfamiliar." This means anything can be achieved with practice. Slow, careful, intentional and methodical practice. I am particularly interested in Neuroscience and how it can be applied to music. We wire what we fire! I want students to be hungry for knowledge. I want them to know that I can help them achieve their musical goals and along the way learn some very valuable life lessons.
