I love music. I still find joy and challenges every time I play. I began studying at a very young age and alot of things are imbedded in my soul. Listening is the most important gift we can give ourselves. Whether in music or in life we can all teach ourselves the gift of listening. I think experiencing the thing we call music is beyond theory. My time in school was nothing next to the thousands of gigs I have accumulated in my 45 years doing music. I have owned a recording studio and produced stuff as well.
I started studying around 5 years old and went through alot of instruments and eventually realized that I was really motivated by singing. I auditioned for Performing Arts High School and ended up getting accepted my junior year of high school. This was a big thing for me as I learned about the different levels of music prowess and it opened me to other styles. Since the age of 14 I played in a band of some sort. I was in original bands and cover bands enjoying both and learning alot. Still playing today!
Practice Practice Practice! and wanting to practice. Probably the most important thing in music at first. The biggest problem is method in itself. There is not just one way to teach everyone. Music is a lifelong study. It never ends. So learning should be the encouragement of accomplishment. Which has to involve learning some theory but focus on mechanical and listening skills as well. Whether we practice the same drum beat over and over or strumming the same chords its here that we find what we call music.
I like to start with basics in every way.. holding the instrument,tuning,songs that interest them,styles, and some history. I want people to be able to play some basic songs fairly quickly. Seeing results in yourself is important to keep motivated. I think it can seem like a impossible thing sometimes. I want everyone to feel like they have accomplished something because music isn’t easy. Basics go a long way in most everything in life. Lets get encouraged and have some fun in the process. Not take ourselves too seriously.
