Bachelors degree in Marketing from the University of Southern Indiana
Musicians Institute MIP award 2009
I not only attended the Musicians Institute, but I also have a Bachelors degree in Marketing which allowed me to teach kids in school settings along with teaching guitar for over 10 years. I have played in bands, and had private lessons with with ex Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman and Chris Poland. I studied Rock, Classical, Metal, Slide, Classic Rock, Ear Training, Music Theory, Acoustic guitar and the stylings of Jimi Hendrix at MI. I have been playing guitar now for over 12 years. I've had over 250 students ranging from 5 to 64 years old in the ten years I have been teaching. Many of my students have gone on to join bands and I have several that I'm still in contact with that are making a good living from playing guitar.
I started playing guitar in 2000 and began teaching people my freshman year (2003) for extra money while earning my Bachelors in Marketing from the University of Southern Indiana. I have been giving lessons ever since then. I have an extreme passion for playing and try to encourage my students to find the same passion. When teaching I mix the lesson with the basics and theory while incorporating the music styles of their favorite players and bands. I always give homework and expect it to be worked on between lessons. I also have set lessons that focus on what the student might be working on for performances and contests. The best part of teaching is age doesn't matter. Musicians have their own language and I easily relate to whoever I'm teaching on their level.
I let the student drive the lessons if they have some experience. If they like Led Zeppelin then I will find a way to use Zep licks and solos to teach them the basics of the instrument to the advanced understandings of solos. For beginner students I always start with basic chords, chromatics, and ways to warm up. I often use the CAGE system when starting with beginners so they will get the basic chords and understand how they are applied all over the neck of the guitar. I always make sure to find out what the students goals are. Each person is different. Some just want to be able to strum and sing while others want to shred and be the best in the world. No matter what they are looking for I push each student just as hard as the other so that they can reach their goals.
I have a love for all kinds of music and look forward to teaching people that have the same. From country to rock, or whatever makes students want to pick up the instrument is what I'll use to teach them what they need and want to learn on the guitar. I always push students so they can reach their goals on the instrument. I will always give homework that will push them, but I make sure that I set a pace that they can handle.
