Overview:
Music has always been a passion of mine. Even from my early childhood, I could remember how music transformed my life in more ways than I could imagine. Research shows us how music has so many benefits so as to impact our emotional state, our memory recall, and even our mental capacities or cognition. I was about 13 years old when I first picked up the guitar. Soon after, I started on the electric and bass guitar. I have played in rock bands and church groups on and off for many years. When I started college, I was however more focused on the piano, general music theory and composition. My teaching style is very laid back and judgement free. I tend to tailor my approach to the specific learning style of the individual. Till this day, I enjoy playing music and find it to be a great respite from the challenges of life. I welcome the opportunity to share with you the joy and wonders of music.
EXPERIENCE
Starting from my days of undergraduate school, I began to teach as an assistant in the department of music at the state university of New York at Stony Brook for a foundational music course. This experience was not only challenging, but exhilarating catapulting me to want to share the joys of music with others. In response, I started my own private music teaching business and contracted with some local music stores to teach introduction to piano and beginner to intermediate levels for guitar, bass guitar, and general music theory. It has always been an encouragement to see people grow in their understanding of music and to see them progress. That in itself has been an ongoing motivation for me.
METHODS USED
There are various approaches used by educators when it comes to teaching music. Because every person learns differently, my teaching style is often tailored to the individual. The foundation of music, however always starts with a general understanding of theory, which is the cornerstone for all that is to follow. Constant repetition is essential in learning to play an instrument. Children do not learn a word or piece of music and then discard it. They add it to their vocabulary or repertoire, gradually using it in new and more sophisticated ways. As with language, the child’s effort to learn an instrument should be met with sincere praise and encouragement. Each child learns at his/her own rate, building on small steps so that each one can be mastered. Children are also encouraged to support each other’s efforts, fostering an attitude of generosity and cooperation.
LESSON STYLE
My approach to teaching encourages the student to not only learn at their own pace, but is judgment free and allows for the student to grow as s/he wishes. Dr Suzuki's said that "musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited". A positive, nurturing environment is created in the lesson and is also essential at home.
