Overview:
I have spent most of my life studying and sharing my love of music. I started studying music theory at age 9, guitar at age 11 and piano at age 16. I graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music and also completed a Master Certification in Writing and Production from Berklee College of Music. I have been lucky to tour nationally with my former band and performed at SXSW and CMJ. I have logged over 500 hours in studios throughout the Boston area both as a performer, producer and engineer.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching almost 4 years ago during my last years in Boston before moving to the Philadelphia area. Stylistically, I focus on practice, patience and passion with my students and have seen great results thus far. I believe in using both contemporary references as well as references from former decades or eras in music. When a student is able to hear the music coupled with seeing the music; amazing things can happen! I encourage all my students (no matter what age) to record their own performances and/or music, during both lessons and practice. I believe that both studying and creating music helps develop a greater passion overall.
METHODS USED
For all beginner students, I start with Berklee Music Theory Book 1 and a few selections from one of my Real Books to begin to apply some theory techniques. Once I feel that the student has a firm understanding of fundamentals of theory I usually have the student select one piece from the Real Book selections and we then begin working on playing the piece as well as analyzing the piece. A synthesis of performance and analysis is one of my core philosophies with all my lessons. For more advanced students, I usually either have them select a piece of music they wish to learn or assign a piece I find to be most useful and challenging based upon their ability.
LESSON STYLE
I attribute my passion in music to all of my music teachers in the past. I know how important it is for the instructor to approach every lesson with passion in order to start develop the passion within the student. I believe there is no progress without passion! Along with a focused practicing schedule, I also encourage all my students to devote some time everyday to listen actively, not passively, to music (any artist or genre) for at least 30 minutes a day. These techniques help me find what exact aspect of music the student is passionate about and helps me guide any and all future lessons.
