Columbus Songwriters Association Finale Showcase Finalist (3x)
Hello there! My name is JT H.. I have been a working musician in the Columbus, Ohio region for over a decade. In that span of time, I've independently released multiple studio albums and given hundreds of performances at venues including: Short North Stage, The Palace Theatre, Natalie's Coal Fire Pizza, Woodland's Tavern, Huntington Park, ComFest, The Bluebird Cafe (Nashville, TN) and many more...Before pursuing a full-time career in music, I graduated from Otterbein University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Journalism. I love music and love connecting with those who share a unique passion for it.
Shortly after graduating from Otterbein University, I became a certified substitute teacher for three consecutive school years (2012-2015). While pursuing my career in music, I also greatly enjoyed my time in the classroom. I was certified to teach grades K-12 and worked at dozens of different school districts in the Columbus, OH area. My experience in these various classroom environments, teaching an array of subjects, helped me develop a comfort level with students of varying backgrounds, interests and age levels. Throughout my music career, I've also provided guitar instruction to select students (which I've also greatly enjoyed).
I believe it's important for beginning guitar players to get a balanced understanding of the guitar, while also taking the time to enjoy the simple milestones. These milestones vary for each student, depending on their personal goals but each stage of the learning curve presents its own unique set of challenges. For many beginners, learning the basic chords and being able to perform their favorite songs is the "ultimate goal" but getting there can lend to serious growing pains... For intermediate players, it's about getting out of the "muscle memory rut" and overcoming their own personal plateaus. It is my hope as an instructor, to help students better navigate their way through whichever unique challenges they're experiencing, so that they can ultimately be in a better position to enjoy the process of learning the instrument.
I believe wholeheartedly that music is supposed to be fun and I have every intention of keeping it that way as an instructor. That isn't to say that learning the guitar is easy. Unfortunately, for most of us it just isn't. However, I do believe that the best way to approach the guitar is recognizing that 1) You're never done learning and 2) That's a good thing. Treating every accomplishment and victory with the proper pat on the back is crucial. From learning the names of the strings, to playing a sold out show to thousands...at the end of the day, it's all relative. What really matters is finding the joy in whatever you're doing, whatever stage you are!
