Worked with members of Elevation Rhythm
I have always had a love and passion for music even since a young age. I have been touring and gigging professionally for the past two years, and have played for almost 14 years. I have been teaching for the past 3 years and my goal is to help people fall in love with the drum kit and learn another creative way of expressing yourself. I have been privileged to work with multiple artist and bands such as indie rock band The Maggie Valley Band, hip-hop artist Virtuous, and singer/songwriter Tanya Lowe. My experience also includes working at churches such as Elevation Church, connecting with members of the Grammy-winning Elevation Worship and Elevation Rhythm and working with them as well.
I am a self-taught drummer who has honed my skills through in-person lessons, self-discovery, and online resources like Drumeo. Over the past three years, I have taught a variety of styles to students, from those eager to master rock songs to drummers currently performing in various settings. My teaching philosophy encourages students to cultivate their unique abilities through regular practice. For younger learners, I incorporate engaging games that reinforce lesson material, while for older students, I introduce concepts like "Film Study," where they analyze the playing of drummers who inspire them. This tailored approach has consistently yielded positive results, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!
For my beginner students, I start by introducing them to the drum kit, providing a bit of history, and understanding their personal goals for learning drums. We focus on fundamentals, including drum notation, and by the end of the first lesson, most students can play a basic groove and fill—giving them the tools to start learning their favorite songs. Once the fundamentals are in place, we move on to learning songs and exploring different techniques, guided by the student's individual goals. My teaching methods are personalized and paced to suit each student's unique learning style and progress.
My teaching style is student-tailored and paced to the their unique goals. Goals and ambitions are set at the beginning of taking lessons and as we progress in learning, After a certain amount of lessons, I'll do a review lesson to see what the student has retained, what we need to focus on, and assess skill level to that point. Each Lesson, students are always encouraged and their hard-work acknowledged while also being challenged and motivated to work hard and give it their best. Nothing is as rewarding to me then hearing how my student reached their ultimate goal or took that first step towards it. You can be the next.
Jay is a very talented drummer. Throughout my couple months of lessons, I learned so much about the art of music and drumming as a whole. 10/10 recommend taking lessons, he’s very open with his schedule, and is patient when teaching.
Jay's passion for both teaching and music are far beyond what I could have ever imagined and expected from a Drum Instructor for my Grandson. His passion was both the inspiration and motivation needed for my Grandson. Jay exercised patience while teaching and lots of encouragement my Grandson needed. Jay taught my Grandson not only the importance of techniques, but, also hard work and consistent practice. Because of Jay's dynamic and very warm personality, I highly recommend Jay for teaching any individual at any age interested in learning.
