Throughout my 20+ years as a music instructor, I have found that a friendly, encouraging approach resonates well with students. I individualize each student's instruction to best serve the goal of positive results through creative music- making. I graduated in 1980 with a Piano Performance degree from Fort Lewis College, Durango, Co., with a minor in music education. My performance experience includes playing for weddings, churches, accompanying other musicians, and playing and singing in jazz and Celtic bands.
I began playing the piano at the age of 3, my father was a musician, and my first teacher! I continued to study classical, pop, and jazz stlyes, and began performing at age 7, and teaching in high school. Since college, I have maintained a private studio, either at home or in pretigious music schools, and have also taught in the school setting. Many of my students have won awards and continue as adults to pursue music- making. I am sure to bring smiles to my students, and am a great motivator! I am able to find music that keeps the students' interest, so they enjoy playing and coming to lessons! Throughout my years as a music educator, I am always so thrilled to see the lessons learned in music carry over to so many other areas in my students' lives!
I have started students as young as four, usually in a pre-school group setting, using Kindermusic and other programs. Formal piano or keyboard lessons usually begin at age 5, there are several great methods available for the young beginner. I choose from several diffenent methods to best suit the age, learning style, and interests of the student. Older students are free to choose pop music, there are many downloadable sites now to find almost anything! I teach adults with one or two method books, and quickly teach them how to play some polished music using chords and other easy techniques. I teach composing from a young age, it's not only fun, but encourages learning music from a creative angle.
Using a tried-and-true approach, I like to teach each student the basics of musicianship in a step-by-step method. Each new concept builds on the previous one. Each student learns a bit differently, that is the wonderful thing about being an individual! I fell that I am able to tap into a student's learning stlye from the first lesson, and find areas that need to be strengthened. This carries over into all areas of learning. Music, as an art form, must be taught and explored creatively! I use many methods to inspire my students including learning to compose, developing a good ear for music, using drums and other instruments in the lesson, doing activities and playing games with the younger students. I like to keep in close contact with the parent or person at home and welcome all input!
