Classically trained pianist for 16 years Classically/gospel trained guitarist for 6 years 2008-MTNA Award recipient 2003- National Piano Playing Auditions International Member
I have been studying music for about 17 years now. I'm very passionate about teaching music. Since 2003 I've been an international member of the piano playing auditions and have won an MTNA award for my musical abilities. Performing every Sunday as a Church Worship Team Pianist and Guitarist, I've come to further my abilities in the music field. I was trained by the Suzuki Method on piano/Violin and Alfred's Method on guitar. My favorite genre to perform would have to be classical but I also enjoy Country, Pop/Rock, Spirituals/Gospels, and Hymnals.
I began giving lessons when I was around 15, since then I've continued to grow in my musical capabilities and gaining in students. I encourage my students to have fun when they take lessons with me and by doing that they stay motivated in learning and loving their instruments. I teach thru games and consistent practice that way the students are learning and having fun at the same time. By consistently practicing the students' mind and muscles gain "muscle memory" while learning their pieces. I give my students a wide array of pieces that way they can choose what they want to learn and still be motivated to learn those pieces.
For the younger students that take lessons with me I introduce them to Alfred's Basic Piano Methods. After the child understands the different notes and scales I will begin to introduce simple songs then gradually moving them up to their first guild and recital performance. If my lesson student is an adult however I will often ask what pieces they are interested in learning how to play. Once they tell me I will adjust my lesson plans to help the student reach their goal of learning that song that they wanted to play then encourage them to find harder pieces that they would like to learn how to play.
Watching my students eyes light up as they reach that "eureka! I understand!" moment is so rewarding, both to me as the instructor and to the student. Every child reaches different milestones at a different time so with that being said I never pressure the child to learn faster than he/she is capable of. I teach to what the child knows and I will help the child explore and grow in their developmental love for music and their instrument. This way when the child learns a piece they are more eager to learn more.
