I was born and raised in Hong Kong and am fluent in Cantonese, English and Mandarin. I grew up singing in a well-established school choir and won multiple awards in the local school music festival as soloist, duet partner, and chorister. I was accepted at the Chinese University of Hong Kong with Honors at entrance and continued to garner merit-based scholarships during college and eventually graduated with First Class Honors. I double majored in English and Music and took part in activities such as the Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival as actor and assistant director and musical productions at Yip's Children Choral and Performing Arts Center. I have furthered my training in Austria (Mozarteum International Summer Academy), Italy (Amalfi Music Festival, Music Academy International), and the States (SongFest, OperaWorks Winter Intensive, Miami Music Festival). I recently finished my Masters in Music at New England Conservatory with Honors and am working around the Boston area as singer and teacher. As I took dance and acting lessons, I know the importance of expression in singing and I try to encourage my students to do that in addition to teaching a solid foundation of vocal technique that I acquired through my international training experience.
My first experience with teaching voice started in my college days as a children choral class instructor (6- 7 years old) at Yip's Children Choral and Performing Arts Center, a reputable music learning centre in Hong Kong. After graduation, I taught at International Christian Quality Music Secondary and Primary School as an applied music teacher in voice, focusing on the one-on-one student teaching. I also have held community masterclasses for my church music group to teach and demonstrate the fundamentals of good singing. I believe a good foundation in breath support and vocal technique can help one master any type of singing: classical, musical, and even pop. It is my greatest joy when I can see my students confidently singing on the stage, achieving a breakthrough in their technique, or finding a connection with the music.
I try to tailor lesson plans to each individual as I believe different people want to get different things out of singing. For younger students, I will focus on the fundamentals of music such as pitch recognition, rhythmic accuracy, scale execution. These building blocks can help children confidently express themselves in music. For older students, I will build on the aforementioned principles and explore how to use technique and emotion to express oneself in singing. There will be a difference for classical and musical learners. For classical, I will focus on techniques such as onset, sustaining, legato, register and agility. For musical, I will work on techniques for healthy belting/chest voice and stage presentation.
I try to incorporate different exercises for each piece of music to keep things interesting for my students. I believe active physical engagement of the body is important to achieve freedom for the voice. This is particularly helpful for younger children to keep their minds from wandering during the lesson. I often ask for feedback from the students, to check in on how they are feeling physically and vocally. During our lessons, I hope to train up students to be creative thinkers and discerning individuals so that they can find their own authentic interpretation of the song.
Jeannette is an elite level teacher. She is able to both analyze and apply advanced musical interpretations with high level students like me but also is very patient and kind teaching younger students and beginner musicians who are just starting out as I’ve seen. I’ve had many teachers and coaches in my life including internationally renowned professors and I’d recommend Jeannette among the very best with regards to ability. Add in her friendly down to earth attitude and she tops the list.
Jeannette is a superb voice teacher! With her knowledge in music, techniques in singing and expertise in teaching, she is able to help her students improve a lot in singing while enjoying the music. If you are looking for a great voice teacher, I would highly recommend her!
I liked her unique strategies because they were physically engaging. For example, she made me walk around the room while singing to take my focus off of getting the right notes and relax. I felt that her strategies really helped because not only did they work, they were also fun to do. Each class we tried something new, rather than doing the same thing every class. I made very nice progress. Thanks for your teaching.
As her colleague and collaborator, I can attest to Jeannette’s musicality and expressivity as a solo musician and her knowledge in singing, combined with her conducting ability, made rehearsals informative and enjoyable in the process.
Jeannette is a wonderful and fun teacher. She brings energy, skill, and patience to lessons. She'll get you out of your comfort zone, and will work with you to find the right repertoire for you. And she's willing to try many different strategies to help you vocally!
