I am a driven and passionate educator with a background in youth arts mentorship for voice, piano, and dance. I position my work as an arts professional to motivate students through pursuit of excellence, to transfer practical skills, and to achieve lasting impact. I graduated from New York University in 2020 with a BA in Music, and a minor in French Language Studies. I have had the opportunity to provide musical and artistic direction for groups and soloists at the high school and college level, with the Anaheim Union High School District and NYU. I have competed myself as a performer with music groups in New York City, Chicago, Orlando, and throughout Southern California.
My music leadership experience began with competitive show choir in 8th grade - voted Student of the Year - and these experiences inspired me through high school! The show choir program director appointed me tenor section leader in 9th grade and Voice Captain in 10th grade for my ability to lead voice sectional rehearsals and provide pianist accompaniment when needed. I am currently a performing arts coach for the Anaheim Union High School District, supporting vocal music and dance program directors with clinician and choreography services. I believe the task of mentorship is simply working towards becoming wholly and enthusiastically unnecessary! That is, to coach the "how" as well as the "what," with love of expression and dedication to excellence! I am also currently on a team composing my first musical!
For students earlier in their journeys, I do believe a practical understanding of music and basic theory is fundamental to unlock both the art and the science of performing. After warm up exercises that help acquire the vocabulary and sonic principles of agile musicianship, I would immediately dive into material that the student finds engaging and personal! I am an advocate for storytelling in the arts first, with mechanical technique and instruction used as vehicles to empower the pure love of expression! The best performances are material that resonates emotionally and authentically with the performer, so I try and connect with any students' journey such that they can find and even create material true to themselves.
A music student should be able to practice and perform as though no one is watching, and that it is simply the spontaneous expression of the soul! For this, I have to curate material and instruction so that it is authentic and engaging to the student - this is what unlocks the truest connection to musicianship. I believe that high-level training is the diligent pursuit of quality and detail - and that talent is simply how one approaches ANY new material. To empower young artists, I like to think of investment in transferable musical skills, not just polishing a "party-trick" repertoire. I also believe in "think neutral, speak positive" - encouraging growth with reinforcement of success and pivoting quickly from each opportunity to improve!
