2011 “Jeff Powers is one of Rockwired’s “25 Guitarists You Gotta Know”…his self-titled release is an engaging listen that will leave the listener amazed at the guitarist’s musicality and virtuosity as well as his tremendous sense of songcraft.” Brian Lush ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE
I've been teaching and performing for 20 years. I graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Music with a degree in Classical Guitar Performance. I also, studied in Mexico City at UNAM with Marco Antonio Anguiano. Besides performing and teaching classical guitar I spent many years playing guitar in blues, rock and acoustic groups. I've recorded 5 CD's of original music and have written over 300 songs.
I've been teaching guitar since before entering the Cleveland Institute of Music. Since graduating I've taught for 5 years at the prestigious music studio "El Estudio Bartok" in Mexico City and in my home town of Cleveland Ohio at Tri C West and various private studios. Now I've dedicated my work to Lessons In The Students Home and at my private residence in Ohio City (Cleveland). I've been performing regularly around Cleveland and touring outside of the city since graduating from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
I like to keep the guitar lessons fun. Because my first experience with learning guitar/guitar lessons (when I was 9 years old) was very boring (just learning from a guitar method) I work at trying to make music fun. I'm an expert at learning songs from the original recordings so I show the student the songs and music they want to learn/play. Right from the first lesson I show real music examples and songs the student loves. The student will be playing guitar right away and after a short time will be prepared to study theory, reading and any style they love. For more advanced students I teach blues, classical, acoustic styles and help with songwriting. I also can give crash courses in music reading to a student who already knows how to play but doesn't read music. My main objective is to make learning music fun and exciting.
I want my students to really learn to play the music they love. I want them to be able to play for someone or an audience. I've regularly taken my students to open mics and performance locations and have them get up in front of an audience and play along with me. I've taught students of all ages and have had many who started in their 50's and 60's and learned to play at an excellent level. I've also taught many young students one od which has won 2 Grammy's and who I perform with from time to time. I always try to find what each students wants from their music experience and work toward that goal keeping it fun and exciting.
