I'm a passionate and experienced musician who has been fortunate to see many aspects of the music world. These include studying classical guitar in a high school conservatory at UNC School of the Arts, collaborating with modern dance companies, and film makers. I'm also a founding member of the alternative rock group Salem Lake which I currently sing and play electric guitar for.
I've been teaching music now for over four years and have had great experiences in studio environments, store environments, and traveling from home to home. I've worked with people of all ages, from all backgrounds, and with interests in many different styles of music. The part that I love most is not just seeing a student's growth in knowledge about music, but also their growth into more patient, hard working individuals. Seeing them become dedicated to reaching their goals while learning such important life skills is very inspiring to me.
For younger beginners I start with simple note reading from Joe Pecararo's Read This First. This gives an opportunity to build a really solid foundation of music theory and music reading at the same time. Older beginners I take through a checklist of basic theory fundamentals of my own creation, basic chords and basic scales. Then we choose a song to learn that applies that foundation. I create custom lesson plans moving forward that line up with the students stylistic desires and capability. The biggest thing I stress with students is having a tool box of practice strategies and keeping lose, relaxed technique.
I believe it's really important for my students to feel encouraged and not overwhelmed. Though there is a time for challenging tasks, creating clearly defined goals before and after each lesson and practice session is key to maintaining that encouragement. I like to ease my students into more challenging material and larger work loads, rather than throwing so much on them at once that they don't know where to begin.
