Originally from Dayton, Ohio I've been in the Tampa Bay, Florida area since 1985. I played drums as a kid but gravitated to guitar in my teens. I've been playing and teaching for about 49 years now. But that doesn't mean that I'm old. In fact it is guitar that keeps me bonded with my youth. In addition to music, I did twenty years of youth work in a variety of non-profit settings. I feel I still relate well to children and youth as well as to adult students. Musically, my creative, growing edge these days involves the current hot trend of Praise Band music. I play live in this setting most every Sunday.
I began teaching guitar professionally for Roger Williams International Music Studios in 1973. We presented a challenging program with accelerated lessons, using a type of computerized teaching. These were group lessons but the advantage you have through Musika is one-on-one instruction. I teach and play acoustic, electric, 12 string and some Bass guitar. For the more advanced electric student who has an interest in the electronics of special effects, I have extensive experience with programming floor pedals. There can be as much art as to crafting the right sound coming out of your amp, as the craft of originating the notes on your fret board. I can also teach in the area of MIDI guitar. MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Information. This is an industry standard that allows for synth guitars and keyboards to communicate with each other and work together. I have one guitar system I custom built that drives three synth modules. At the touch of a button, my guitar can sound like a pipe organ, violins, drums, over 2000 sounds in all. This one is not for the beginner.
We always start where you are at. So we begin by getting acquainted and assessing your present skills and discovering your interests and what you would like to accomplish. If you are a total beginner, that’s fine. I can show you your first chord with just one finger. I often develop custom lessons for a student. I like to get you going where you can play something fairly quickly. If you're not having fun, if you don't feel you're accomplishing something, you won't stick with it. I don't bore you with endless scales and picking single notes for months on end. We get to chords pretty quickly so you can actually play songs. If you already know some chords, it's time to work our way up the guitar neck. There are four or five ways to play each chord up the neck.
My style is simple, friendly, no pressure and relational. I love to teach guitar. Again, if this isn't fun, you won't stick with it. If any instrument should be fun, it should be the guitar. All those guys on TV always look like they're having a blast. But before they got behind the camera, they put in a lot of practice time. So I'm going to reveal the big secret to becoming a good (or great) guitarist right here - for free. PRACTICE. The bottom line way to get good at guitar is to PLAY IT. We can show you all kinds of techniques and theory but you have to want to pick up that thing and have it in your hands. Fiddle with it during the TV commercials. You have a need to squeeze that neck everyday. Together we can expand your knowledge base, but you hold the ultimate key to your success - practice.
