Growing up in New Orleans, LA, I have performed with many outstanding musicians in the area including Russell Batiste, Johnny Vidagovich and Ed Petersen. I also had a regular gig performing with saxophonist Bill Kelsey, formerly Duke Jordan’s sideman as well Al Hirt. Notable venues in the New Orleans area include Tipitina's, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, The Maple Leaf and The Howlin' Wolf. While in New Orleans I co-led a Latin/Jazz ensemble that included guitarist Makuni Fukuda, currently touring with Aaron Neville. After studying jazz performance at the University of New Orleans under the tutelage of jazz icon Ellis Marsalis, I attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston being awarded the Best Entering Student Talent scholarship in '02 and the Berklee Achievement-based Scholarship in '02, '03 and '04 graduating with honors in 2005 with a Major in Bass Performance. Since graduation, I have been busy playing bass with a diverse range of ensembles. I have performed and recorded with New England jazz artists such as Lee Fish, Julien Kasper, Michael Shea, Alexei Tsiganov, Maxim Lubarsky, Angela Rossi and many others. I also co-lead an original Latin/Jazz project, Two Worlds, with drummer Rodrigo Bonelli and pianist Michael Shea. With this group, I released a full-length album called 'Stream of Stars' which is available in stores. Two Worlds has played festivals and clubs throughout the Northeastern U.S. including DROM, Miles Cafe, Shrine and Sugar Bar in New York City and Ryles Jazz Club, The Fireplace, The Beehive, and The Vernissage in Boston. I also perform regularly with Samba Lolo, a renowned World-beat/Afro-pop ensemble led by Mali native Boubacar Diabate. Recent venues include the African Festival in Lowell, MA and the Northeast Kingdom Music Festival in Albany, VT among other clubs and festivals across the United States. In addition to these creative endeavors, I have recently been touring and recording with the renowned World fusion band Newpoli. This band has taken me on tour throughout the U.S. and Italy, most recently culminating in a tour of New Mexico and Arizona in January and February of 2020. My latest recording with Newpoli, 'Mediterraneo', was considered for a Grammy nomination in 2019. I've also had the pleasure of performing and recording with emerging artist Brad Byrd who is signed to Free Agency Records, appearing on the album entitled 'Last Night In Manchester'. Notable venues I've played in New York not mentioned above include The Knitting Factory, The Bitter End, Tomi Jazz Club, The Mercury Lounge, The Living Room and Rockwood Music Hall as well as live television appearances on WABC-TV. Notable venues played in New England not mentioned above include The Berklee Performance Center, The Paradise Rock Club and Foxwoods Casino. In addition to his principal instrument, bass guitar, I am proficient on many other instruments including upright bass, electric and acoustic guitar, piano/keyboards and drums/percussion. I have been a qualified, dedicated and in demand music instructor for nearly 15 years and am currently accepting students on guitar, bass and piano.
I have been teaching music since 2005. I started as an in home music instructor, providing guitar, bass and piano lessons to people of all ages in their homes. As my teaching experience grew, I've added drums and ensemble/group lessons to my repertoire. I've also been hired as a bass and guitar instructor and curriculum director by a number of private music schools in and around the Boston area. My lessons focus on creating excitement and enthusiasm for the instrument through playing examples, live playing or "jamming" and encouraging the student to develop a consistent practice schedule. I also strongly encourage students to play with other musicians and enjoy teaching ensembles and group lessons.
I have developed a method for guitar students of all ages to quickly learn chords and scales so that they can not only learn the chord progression to songs, they can also find the correct scale to "solo" and improvise over them. Once the chord structure and scale are learned I accompany the student, playing along with them so that they can practice playing with another musician and soloing. I have also developed a full curriculum for teaching bass guitar to all ages and skill levels. Bass lessons focus on technique and time feel/groove while learning songs and important styles and rhythms.
I cater my teaching style to each student's age, skill level and personality. I have a patient, relaxed teaching style but I'm always ready and willing to push the student as far as they want to go, encouraging them to try their best. Lessons are usually organized into a section focused on technique and music theory followed by a period dedicated to playing songs together, polishing up repertoire and focusing on playing music in real time, together as an ensemble. I constantly provide positive reinforcement to my students, gently reminding them that practicing regularly will help them get the most out of lessons and make learning an instrument more fun.
