Some professional highlights include conducting for the President of the United States, performing as a solo pianist at Carnegie Hall, selling over 100,000 piano CDs under the pseudonym of David Raintree, and having an evening of my original music performed by the illustrious Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Music has been a driving force in my life since I was a child. I began playing the piano at age seven. As a teenager, I studied classical piano in Long Beach, California with noted piano pedagogue, Joanna Hodges. As a student at UCLA, I continued my piano studies with pianist/personality Mona Golabek. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from UCLA.
My professional life in Hollywood has been devoted to working in films and TV as a composer. Film credits include over 40 films. My television music can be heard in FOX, BRAVO, THE HISTORY CHANNEL, THE FOOD NETWORK, THE PET CHANNEL, AMC, MTV, and TURNER MOVIE CLASSICS.
Through my arranging and orchestration work, I have garnered three platinum records working alongside several well-known artists, most notably pianist/composer Yanni.
I performed and co-produced a series of easy listening piano CDs under the name of David Raintree. These CDs have sold over 100,000 copies. David Raintree was a featured artist on the domestic flights of United Airlines.
In ten years in New York City, I had four of my musicals produced. I also conducted Broadway shows including the original Broadway productions of LES MISERABLES and SONG AND DANCE. Upon returning to Los Angeles, I played the 1st Keyboard position in the Los Angeles production of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA starring Michael Crawford at the Ahmanson Theatre.
Some personal career highlights include conducting for the President of the United States, performing as a solo pianist at Carnegie Hall, and having an evening of my original music performed by the illustrious Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
For over 10 years, I have been providing the Los Angeles area with inspiring and fun lessons at the piano. I have been playing the piano for over 40 years, both professionally and recreationally. When you choose me as your teacher, you are getting much more than a 'piano' teacher. You are getting a consummate musician who has devoted his life to making music professionally throughout the world.
If you are a beginning student, in a short period of time, you will be making music at the piano. If you are an advanced student, my lessons will guide you towards deeper and more meaningful personal expression at the piano. I teach piano with an emphasis on both enjoyment and ease of learning. I tailor your piano/music lesson according to your skill level, while incorporating music fundamentals and musicianship. I also offer theory and composition studies. My primary goal for every lesson is that you enjoy your time at the piano while, at the same time, achieving the goals that we will set together at the start of your lessons.
Singer Andrea Bocelli said: “We use music to say the things we could never say with words.”
Let me bring the awesome fun and joy of playing the piano to you today!
My goal is for my students to succeed in making music at the piano. My lessons focus on 1. scales and exercises to build finger, hand, and arm strength...yes! arm strength because you use your arms in making music at the piano. 2. Exploring the piano in terms of it as a powerful tool of expressing your unique internal musical personality. 3. Exploring and perfecting music and songs the student and I choose together to be sure that the a) student enjoys what they are playing and practicing...and b) that the music will be beneficial for their growth at the piano.
