Course Work: 15 years taking lessons from a classically trained instructor
I'm a 21-year-old pianist who's been playing since the age of 5. At a young age, I developed an intense love for music and started performing at country clubs, retirement homes, and for friends and family. I took lessons for 15 years from an amazing instructor who had decades of experience teaching a variety of styles and genres to a wide range of ages. While I mainly enjoy playing classical pieces from composers such as Chopin, Beethoven, and Liszt, I also enjoy playing broadway show tunes and modern music from artists such as Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Lana Del Rey.
I believe that playing the piano should be fun, not a cold or rigid experience. Unlike many piano teachers, I tailor-make a lesson plan for each of my students so their personal goals can be achieved, individual needs met, and so they can play what they want to! Not only do I teach piano, but I also teach an appreciation for and understanding of music as a whole so my students can develop their musical ear. My goal as a piano teacher is to deliver an immersive and hands-on musical experience that my students will never forget!
While my students will follow a basic program, I vary my teaching techniques based on the student's individual needs. For younger students, I typically start with John W. Schaum Piano Course: Pre-A: The Green Book and A Dozen a Day Piano Exercises. For older students, I like to use our first complimentary 30-minute lesson to discuss their personal goals and create a basic lesson plan. With EVERY student, I implement the use of flashcards, games, videos, interactive experiences, and enjoyable homework assignments that will teach the student how to play the piano, read sheet music, understand music theory, and appreciate music as a whole.
As Beethoven once said, "To play a wrong note is insignificant. To play without passion is inexcusable!" That is my approach to teaching, I do my best to instill a love and passion for music in each of my students. I will never force my students to do something they don't enjoy and I promise to make learning piano (even the technical aspects) a fun experience. Every student progresses at their own pace, which is why I encourage my students to set realistic goals they can reasonably attain. Setting realistic goals infuses students with confidence when they are accomplished and motivates them to keep learning more! I always look for ways to inspire my students and make them proud of their progress.
