I won second place in a piano contest when I was 13 years old.
I am passionate about teaching the piano, an instrument that I love. I connect well with students and adapt my teaching style to their learning preference. I have been playing the piano for over 30 years. I also play the keyboard. I am able to teach both piano and keyboard; learning the piano and the keyboard is essentially the same, it just requires a different touch and the keyboard can create more sounds. I have been classically trained and I also play modern music. I can teach both, but beginngers will learn basic music.
I taught formal lessons after I had graduated from college. I have also instructed family and friends and have helped them further develop their piano skills. Encouraging regular practise and emphasizing proper hand and wrist placement are things that I emphasize. I like to watch and see why someone is struggling to play a song, and I am able to offer a solution. I like to teach students how to play music that they enjoy: their favorite songs by their favorite artists. But beginners will have to learn the basics first.
I am flexible and I adapt my method to the student. I like to start students out with learning scales right away. If you can learn the scales, it makes learning new songs so much easier. Plus, they are great excercise for building agility. I also like to use a book called "A Dozen a Day" which includes more excercies for building agility and helping students master more difficult levels of music. If it seems like my student is learning quickly, I like to challenge them with more difficult music.
I allow the students to progress at their own pace, and I love developing in them a passion for learning the piano. Learning to play the piano should be fun! Some of the process can be repetitive, but helping students see the payoff makes the repetitive part worth it. I am a positive, encouraing person. Students are comfortable with me and enjoy the lessons because of my attitude towards it. I also acknowledge their accomplishments and provie positive reinforcement, which motivates them to continue.
