BFA- The Boston Conservatory of Music, Proud Member of NATS -National Association of Teachers of SInging and AEA-Actors Equity Association
Overview:
I have been fortunate to work in the entertainment industry my entire career. I have traveled the world as a musical theatre actress and choreographer. Always loving to teach I started coaching a few friends for fun on the side and voila, a new career began!
EXPERIENCE
I began studying voice prior to college with world renowned teacher, Helen Boatwright in Syracuse, NY. This training was classical. Loving jazz, I started also to sing with Dianna Spradling at Syracuse University. Soon after, I decided to go to college for musical theatre at The Boston Conservatory where I continued my studies with Walter Boyce and Robert Honeysucker, both of whom used a more classical technique. Through the years as a performer, I have worked with many coaches and teachers short term in NY and LA. About 10 years a go, I began teaching on the side. I now have 30+ students. Some come to my home and some at a studio in St. Clair Shores. My goal is to get my singers performing as much a s possible. We have a standing performance at a local coffee house every month as well as an annual recital. I also encourage my students to audition for shows and scholarships by providing them with opportunities.
METHODS USED
My method varies with each student. I listen to the students needs and use my expertise to help them achieve their goals. For younger students, I use a variety of material but very much like The Royal Conservatory Program. In the age of, "American Idol", "The Voice" and "Glee", everyone wants to be a star overnight. While this enthusiasm is wonderful, it is sometimes difficult to direct students to material that suits their voice and will build their instrument. Often we need to take 2 steps back and get a handle on proper support and phonation before we can step forward into challenging material. Most of my students are focused on Pop or Musical Theatre. I love the Hal Leonard Anthologies for this because they come with fabulous piano accompaniments.
LESSON STYLE
My goal is to give my students the ability to self assess. They should be able to feel when they are singing correctly, without me always pointing it out. They learn these skills through scales, basic anatomy and physiology, physical exercises, visualization etc. I am kind, patient, supportive, and always do my best to uplift my students. I give them many tools to work with. I make sure they have scales to practice, either by recording their lesson or by sending them digital files via e-mail. I do the same with accompaniments and music. Having monthly opportunities to perform keeps us on point and goal oriented.
