I have been sharing my love of music since first learning at age four! I am a classically-trained pianist and organist with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.Throughout high school and college, I have had opportunities to study voice and sing in honors and collegiate choirs. Since graduating in 2014, I have enjoyed music making on the west coast while living in Oregon. I have recently moved to New Orleans to pursue my Master of Music Therapy degree at Loyola University. I am looking forward to building up a new studio of students in Louisiana!
I began teaching private lessons seven years ago while pursuing my bachelor's degree in piano performance. I have had the opportunity to teach students with ages varying from 3 to adult. While in college, I studied Piano Pedagogy and our course taught in a group setting with 16 adults each week. I have given vocal lessons for the last year, and I have experience as a musical theater, operetta, and adult choral director. I have also assisted many soloists in preparation for their vocal performances.
For beginning students, I vary my teaching methods quite a bit. I often take on students in households that already have method books purchased, and I have never had an issue with using them. At times, more books are needed, but I will allow the student to utilize these already-owned options, as I myself will supplement extra music. Students will often mentally understand what they need to do, but the necessary motor skills take time and repetition to achieve their goals. For this reason, I prefer to do less talking, and as much piano playing as possible during lessons. Theory will be taught, but my initial goal is to keep students engaged and enjoying their music.
As I'm struggling to describe my teaching style, I'm realizing that it is very adaptable as I am teaching such a variety of learners. I have found so much joy in music and am motivated to see my students succeed and move past the repetitive beginner stage to actual music making and a tool they can use in their lives. For this reason, I will select music that inspires and encourages my students and will give honest feedback to help them grow as musicians. Students will be expected to practice daily for at least a half hour to ensure progress and confidence in their abilities.
