I help my students to first build a musical foundation. I motivate my students to practice consistently until they develop their own intrinsic motivation and aesthetic sensitivity to music. I allow them to bring in world music from other cultures or pop music and arrange and adapt it to their levels. My students regularly win the highest level of awards possible in State and local competitions, because I teach them how to tap into their innate music intelligence and to grow a love for it. I have also taught singers to arrange their own accompaniment.
I am a high-level music educator who helps my students tap into their deepest potentials. When I hear a student playing a song they have made up, I teach them how to write it down. I am in the process of developing an application that helps students learn to notate what they have played on the piano in such a way that they are learning how to compose. Composition cannot be taught, but learning how to write (or notate), music can. Music composition is by far the highest level of cognitive synthesis in music.
I have been teaching for 20 years, with my own business for 10 years. My teaching style is very student centered. This allows me to focus on their unique abilities and interests while building a solid musical foundation. Individualized teaching is my passion. I adapt my teaching style to each students' learning style and then teach them how to express themselves individually through music. I still use traditional methods to build good technique and practice habits, but allow my students to bring their own interests' into our lessons. I am skilled at arranging non-traditional piano music into piano music that my students' can learn and play at their own skill levels.
For students between the ages of 3 and 7, I typically use either the Little Mozarts method or the Birds and Dogs method. For students who are older, I use a combination of methods, including Alfred's, Bastien and Faber. I have also designed and used my own curriculum for students with special needs, including students who have autism, cerebral palsy, nerve damage, ADHD and for gifted students. I incorporate classical music including Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Kabalevsky and many others for more advanced students, and especially for students who are competing.
I constantly assess my students' skill and ability levels and use curriculum accordingly. I am very intuitive with how my students are feeling about their own progress and constantly check in with them to see how they feel about their progress and accomplishments. I set goals for my students, ensure that they practice to reach them on a regular basis, and then celebrate their success with positive reinforcement. This includes verbal praise and encouragement, parental involvement and recitals.
