I am a professional drummer originally from the San Francisco East Bay area. I started percussion instruction in elementary school at age 9, proceeding through high schools playing in the concert, symphonic, jazz, and marching bands. At 19 I joined the US Army, where I honorably served my enlistment, and continued to play professional gigs around central Texas. In 2003 I moved to Los Angeles to study at the M.I. (Musicians Institute). In 2006, I accepted a position with The Van-Dells and moved to Nashville, Tennessee. After returning in 2007, having received my Journeyman and Professional certificates in percussion, I was hired on in 2007 as a classroom drummer, teaching assistant, and LPW (Live Playing Workshop) instructor, all the while playing gigs with local bands and working doing recording sessions. I currently teach online and remotely, play with multiple local L.A. bands, and frequently perform in live and studio setting.
I have been teaching privately over 19 years, currently online and remotely, as well as almost 10 years at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. The majority of my students have been young, college age students between 17-30 years of age. I have also taught children as young as 4 and adults up to 69. Many of my students have been international, thus I have experience in clearly stating the goals in an understandable and convenient way. With almost any student, I can help set up a plan for success. After all, the main goal is for a student to find happiness and pleasure from their advancement and growth. I am here to help get your playing to where you want it to be, and beyond!
My lessons are based on 3 different approaches. The first is the understanding of the essential rudiments for drumming. These help to instill all of the basics and the foundation of drumming. The second is utilizing the collegial based learning systems. These include instruction in many genres, dynamics, appropriate context, and practical application of drumming. Lastly, I identify both the specific individual goals and the strengths and weaknesses of that specific student. Then we address how to nurture the strengths and lessen, if not eliminate the weaknesses. "Perfect practice makes perfect"
My teaching style is based fully on understanding the goals and dreams of each individual student. I like to develop a plan to get each student to a level of proficiency in which they can direct themselves toward the next goal. This is done through consistent methodology and practice scheduling, as well as periodic reviews of the students past progress up to date. Often times, the student will not even realize they have crossed a hurdle as it is easy to start looking further down the road as the students abilities start to become second nature. The end goal is to have a reciprocal relation with the student where we both can learn from each other and delve into new music arenas.
