MM, University of Redlands, Cello Performance BM, University of Northern Colorado, Theory & Composition Certificate in Film and Television Scoring, UCLA Extension
Overview:
Hi there! I'm very excited to be pursuing my lifelong passion for sharing music. I've played cello and piano since childhood and recieved my Masters in Cello Performance from the University of Redlands in May of 2014. Prior to that I recieved my Bachelors in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Northern Colorado. I've also recieved a certificate in Film and Television Scoring from the UCLA Extension. I've actively been teaching cello in the greater Los Angeles area since 2009 and love helping other people discover how they can enjoy music!
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience begain in 2008 when I inherited my former instructor's Los Angeles studio. I've tought consistently sincen then and have found that no matter what their age or music experience is, everyone can learn to play and enjoy an instrument. The fundamentals of playing cello are the same for everyone, no matter when or where or how you start. Establishing realistic expectations and developing consistent practice habits to support them are essential to success. But even more important, I've found that the whole process has to be enjoyable and fun!
METHODS USED
I've found that keeping an open mind about methods is really helpful when dealing with beginning students, young and old. I've tought from various method series including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Emily Wright's A Modern Cellist's Manual, Muller Rusch, and more. While I'm not a certifited Suzuki instructor, I do teach from the Suzuki method when students or parents request it. What's important is matching the right method to the right student which I tend to determine at our initial lesson. I create custom materials as lessons progress, tailored to the needs of each specific student. For more advanced students often favor etudes and studies series such as Popper and Schroeder over methods. It all depends on the student.
LESSON STYLE
Being a private instructor affords me the opportunity to really tailor each learning experience to my student's needs, personality and musical aspirations. I enjoy the lesson most when my student is enjoying the lesson, so it's important to me that we're working on enjoyable music, making good progress and working hard enough to have fun. While I make sure to keep a record of goals and achievements in lessons, I also like to go with the flow of the student's pace of learning.
