I am a charismatic, fun, sensitive, and super-knowledgeable instructor ready to help you achieve your musical dreams! I left my Ph.D. in 2013 so I could perform and teach more on my own terms, and I am thrilled to be a working performer in New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. My earliest musical training was in voice, and I have been an accompanist for many years, so I enjoy collaborating on helping vocal students express their highest potential. I play all genres of popular music, but also love teaching classical vocal techniques for those interested. I look forward to creating a powerful and inspirational instructor-student relationship if that is something that is important to you!
I aim to create a safe and open space for students to try, make mistakes, and make progress in a supportive environment. We laugh, we consider, and we seriously make beautiful music happen, often very quickly. I like to carve each lesson for what my students need, and it has a fun, experimental element: special technical exercises for your voice, listening and repeating work-outs for breath and pitch, and even more specifics for your goals. I ask vocalists to improvise and get in touch with their inner singer-composer, because so much of understanding others' music is understanding what's inside you! We'll have great fun and learn so much!
Since I'm focusing on voice lessons, I work with all students on being aware of their breathing. Having the right breathing patterns (since there are many varieties) is what can give you the edge and really bring out the best voice inside of you. Honestly, I mostly will give students recent pop songs that are good for the voice unless one is a stickler for classical songs, in which I sometimes use the 24 Italian Art Songs and Arias. I usually compose basic songs for vocalists, tuning in to what needs the most exercise in the voice.
As you'll see, I'm fun, happy, and have a great sense of humor. I'm very passionate about bringing out your best, and we'll work hard to find that path to bring out your best qualities as a musician. We never go any faster than the student can handle, so that there's never any rush for a goal, only that there be progress we are all satisfied with. I want to know your favorite singers and songwriters. If you have favorite music, I sometimes like to listen to a few minutes to inspire us toward the lesson's goals--We have be inspired by music, and it's the reason we take lessons and try to achieve our musical goals!
