I am a passionate and creative teacher who strives to perform and teach. I love the feeling music gives me and I want to share that feeling. I have been playing music for much of my life and I am making a career out of it. I will attend Azusa Pacific University to receive a Bachelor of Music degree in commercial bass performance. My goal is to take the knowledge I receive and pass it on. My instructors have had great influence on me and I want to influence my students to pursue music as well. My passion drives me to continue to be a better musician and teacher. It is my goal to teach students to be unique.
I have been playing bass and guitar since seventh grade. I have played in school’s jazz band, wind ensemble, string ensemble and chapel band. I have also been the bass player for St. Paul’s Lutheran church since my freshman year of high school. I have taught young beginners the basics of playing guitar and bass at St. Paul’s Lutheran school. My goal is to inspire students to do great things and be performers. I will go to great lengths to get my students the results they want. I will also attend Azusa Pacific University to study commercial music to further my musical ability and career. I am passionate for music and I strive to share my passion with others.
For beginners, I start with the basics. I will show the student the anatomy of the guitar or bass and how to care for it. After that, I will begin to teach basic techniques. I will show how to pluck the strings and fret the notes. Once the student has a grasp of those concepts, I will teach them basic chords and scales. I will also teach the student how to sight read because in my opinion it is one of the greatest skills a musician needs. When a student has got the basics down, I will begin to teach them songs of their choosing and recommend songs to learn. For more intermediate to advanced students, I will find their passion and see what they want to play. I will work to inspire them and get them to perform as much as possible. I understand that everyone learns differently, so I will make each student their own unique lesson plan in order to maximize learning.
I approach teaching in a fun, practical way. It is easy to get swept up in technique and theory when learning an instrument. While those are very important, it is essential to apply them musically. Every concept I teach, I will provide an example in an actual piece of music. I will help students set realistic goals to achieve to keep the passion going. Music is my life and I want to share my love for music with my students. I want to motivate students to play music for themselves and help find their own voice. I do not want to make a student a copy of me or another player. Therefore, it is my goal to help students find their passion and help guide them to have their own style on their instrument.
