2016-2020 vilonia high school outstanding percussionist
2020 all state First band jazz drummer
2021 university of central arkansas music scholarship
My name is Jerry B. and I’m a well-experienced musician specializing in drum set. I‘ve played drum set for 8 years with numerous groups of different styles. I was the number 1 percussionist in my school band program through all of middle and high school. I was also a participant in the school jazz band and was the top percussionist in that band as well. Every Sunday and Wednesday for the last 8 years I have also played with the praise band at my church. After graduating high school, I attended UCA on a music scholarship for a year. Among these groups, I’ve also played with, founded, and joined many local bands ranging from country bands to pop bands. My profile as a percussionist is not limited to any style or genre. My second and third instruments are guitar and ukulele. I have about 4 years guitar experience and 1-2 ukulele but my abilities and experience limit me to teaching only beginners on these instruments.
My teaching experience is primarily free lance and unprofessional. In high school, I was delegated the responsibility of teaching all the percussionists in my section the pieces we played. For a short time, I helped my mother (who is a licensed teacher), create a curriculum for teaching English to children online. The rest of my teaching experience in primarily with friends and peers who wanted to learn to play drums or guitar. I’ve had students of all ages as well, ranging from 7 to 40. I have no trouble working with people older than me and I’m great with kids!
For beginners, I find it best to nurture creativity. In my experience, beginners struggle to see progress they make because they don’t understand the essential functions of their instrument in the music. When teaching, I primarily focus on the ability to play without premeditation. This not only generates the feeling of speedy progress, but, allows students to create their only sound and feel confident in their playing. With intermediate and advanced learners, I primarily focus on the struggles subjective to the student. When helping with these problems I try to promote the mindset of creativity so the student can incorporate their new skills into their own style.
My teaching style is very hands-on and has a ‘there is no wrong answer‘ kind of mood. I strive to make every student feel like they are leading themselves to the musical future they dream of. I find learning music that you like listen to helps students feel productive. I always make a point to ask about music taste so that I can find songs that are good practice for whatever the student and I may be covering. Every few lessons I give written (sheet music) or recorded exercises to my students to practice in their free time. I do suggest practice outside lessons but it is not required.
